If you searched "how to start a career in IT" and got back a wall of generic listicles, you already know the problem. The advice that worked in 2018, get a CompTIA cert, take a help-desk job, work your way up, still appears at the top of search results, but the industry it describes barely exists anymore. This guide is the version we wish someone had handed us in 2026.

What "an IT career" actually means in 2026

"IT" used to mean racking servers and resetting passwords. Today the umbrella covers six distinct tracks, each with its own skill stack, salary curve, and AI-displacement risk:

Step 1, Build the foundation (months 0, 3)

Step 3, Build a portfolio that proves you can ship (months 4, 9)

The single biggest filter at entry-level hiring is "has this person built and shipped real things?" Three serious projects beat ten tutorials every time.

  • Project 1: Something you actually use yourself. A budget tracker, a workout logger, a tool that scrapes job listings, solving your own problem keeps you motivated.
  • Project 2: Something with a third-party API. Stripe, OpenAI, Twilio, Google Maps, proves you can read docs and integrate.
  • Project 3: Something deployed end-to-end with auth, a database, and a paying-customer-grade UI.

Step 4, Land the first paid role (months 10, 14)

  1. Internship → conversion. Still the highest-conversion path. Aim 4-6 months before you'd want to start full-time.

Certifications: which still pull weight

Ignore the cert-collector advice from 2018. In 2026 only a few certifications move the needle for hiring managers, and they're concentrated in cloud and security.

  • AWS Solutions Architect Associate, still the cloud cert most respected at the entry/mid level.
  • Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer, strong if you're targeting GCP shops.
  • CompTIA Security+, the only entry-level security cert that consistently opens doors.
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), non-trivial proof you can actually run production clusters.

Skip generic CompTIA A+/Network+ unless you're targeting government IT roles. Skip "AI Practitioner" certs from random vendors, recruiters don't recognize them yet. Hands-on cloud and AI experience beats certification stacks every time.

The AI question: will IT still exist in 5 years?

Short answer: yes, but the shape changes. The McKinsey State of AI 2024 survey found 65% of organizations now regularly use generative AI, up from 33% the prior year, but adoption has not collapsed software hiring. It has shifted what gets hired.

"AI compresses the bottom of the skill curve. Tasks that defined the junior role in 2020, boilerplate code, basic translation between specs and tickets, are now AI-assisted.
